Data Visualization as Problem Solving

From a functionalist perspective, the conscious act of creating visual displays of information is similar to engineering. Visualized data are tools for the mind, just like devices that help people explore information. To be effective, data visualization must fulfill its purpose. We should know precisely what question needs to be addressed, what information needs to be conveyed, and whether the form we choose to visualize the data is the optimal way to get the message across.
