    Toxicity's Integrity

Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at 5:30 PMCentral Daylight Time UTC -05:00

The word "toxic" has a fascinating etymological history. This presentation tracks the usage from the time of Hippocrates and Aristotle in ancient Greece through the present day. While historically "toxic" was roughly equated with poison (although even that is an oversimplication) today its meaning has changed to refer to phenomena which, while harmful, aren't explicitly about physical health dangers such as toxic workplaces, toxic relationships, and toxic masculinity. Or are they? For millennia, sources of toxicity were limited to plants, minerals, and animals. One definition of "integrity" has to do with wholeness. What then should we consider about toxicity when considered holistically? How should we consider the detriments and the benefits (!) of toxicity?
