    Advanced Bargaining Certificate Program

DePaul’s Labor Education Center now offers an intensive, hands-on certificate for people in the labor field. The Advanced Bargaining Certificate will provide high-level training to negotiate stronger contracts and cost out a detailed union proposal. The advantage of earning this certificate to those in a labor industry is gaining an enhanced working knowledge which allows participants to fulfill roles more effectively and obtain certification. The certificate has long been recognized by people in the local labor field as an indicator of quality and essential training that leaders need to better support their members. Completing this training proves that participants are equipped with the knowledge and skills to move into higher levels of leadership or employment in their organization.

This certificate is comprised of two courses: “Union Side Contract Drafting,” and “Union Side Contract Costing.” In the Drafting course, participants will learn how to draft effective union contract proposals. Students will practice identifying and revising contract language that has multiple denotations, connotations and ambiguities, while learning how to ensure the intent of the negotiation is clearly represented. They will also learn how to ensure the final language of a collective bargaining agreement is clear enough for a member to enforce and an arbitrator to agree with. In the Costing course, participants will learn how to cost out a union proposal for a Collective Bargaining Agreement in detail and how to communicate that information to members in a meaningful way. Those who complete these courses will fill an important niche in the labor world while also providing practical, immediately useful information for union members to continue their education.
